Although our two town's paths had crossed a number of times due to us both being twinned with Emmendingen our relationship really began with an invitation from the Mayor of Sandomierz, Jerzy Borowski, for a small delegation to visit Sandomierz in September 2005 to join a joint celebration with Emmendingen. The Town Council accepted the invitation and Bridget Cook, Max Cope, Rita Crowe, Gill Dawn, Val Picker and Len Wilkes flew to Poland. David Payne and Isabel Cupit travelled by car and met the rest in Sandomierz. We were made very welcome over a packed and tiring weekend. A reciprocal invitation was issued for a return visit to Newark. Click the link above for photos of the trip.

On 29th March 2007 a party of Newark representatives travelled to Sandomierz for the official signing of the Charter between our two towns. The party included a number of councillors, including the Town Mayor, Marika Tribe, a Pole by birth, and members of the Twinning Association. Most flew from East Midlands to Krakow where a coach collected us for the 3 hour journey to Sandomierz.
