Emmendingen is situated midway between Strasbourg and Basel in the Black Forest region of Germany and has a population of approximately 25000. There are many interesting visits to be made from Emmendingen such as the Hochburg castle, Freiburg, Colmar, and the Breisgau wine trail. The town itself is a mixture of old and modern, with a historic Town Hall and its modern replacement, museums, picturesque 18th century houses and a water wheel that generates enough electricity for 60 households. The surrounding countryside is perfect for hiking and for ski-ing in winter, and the hillsides are covered in vines producing good quality white wines.
2024 Trip to Emmendingen
In August 2024, some of the members from Newark Twinning Association travelled to Emmendingen to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the twinning relationship between Newark and Emmendingen.
Members were also joined by Newark’s Town Mayor, Diane Ledger, who was invited to sign the friendship charter between the two towns. There was an exchange of gifts with Newark presenting Stefan Schlatterer, the Mayor of Emmendingen, with a model of Newark Town Hall made by students from Newark College.
Newark & Sherwood Concert Band accompanied the Newark Twinning Association and were invited to perform a concert in the town’s Markplatz as part of the town’s annual WeinFest.
It was a most enjoyable visit, further cementing lifelong friendships that have been made over the years.
